CHAPTER 18
ASHLEY
âI canât believe we are doing this.â I huffed and checked my makeup in the mirror on the back of the sun visor in Whitneyâs car.
âYou have to admit that Brooklyn is acting so weird lately,â Whitney said. âNow sheâs getting creepy threats left on her car and then sneaking off to meet up with Grayson Huntley?â Whitney shook her head. âShe needs us looking out for her.â
âExcept thatâs not what we are doing. We are literally stalking her.â I gestured to the coffee shop across the street. âThey have been in there for almost an hour. How long are you planning to have us sit in your car waiting for them to leave?â
âThey canât stay in there forever. Brooklyn said she has to work tonight, remember?â
âShe mightâve lied to us,â I pointed out. âI think sheâs been doing that a lot lately. I mean, she lied to us when we left the mall so she could go home. Does this look like her home?â
Whitney ignored me as she stared through the coffee shop window. âTheyâre getting up! Stay low in your seat.â
âSheâs going to recognize your car, Whit.â Not only was her car ridiculously fancy, but she also had an annoying vanity license plate with her name on it.
âHere they come.â Whitney pushed the sunglasses down from the top of her head onto her nose as if they would provide the only cover she would need. âB isnât even looking around. Sheâs too focused on her new boyfriend.â
That was true. Brooklyn and Grayson were so busy looking at one another that neither of them even glanced anywhere near where Whitney had parked. âIt looks like heâs following her to her car.â I watched as Grayson put a hand on Brooklynâs lower back as they walked down the sidewalk. âWhit, what if this was just a date? They met at the bookstore and then got some coffee. Maybe B wasnât completely honest about where she was going, but she probably knew how we would react if sheâd told us she was meeting up with Grayson.â
âI donât think this is a date. They were on their phones most of the time they were in the coffee shop. It looked like Grayson was texting someone, probably another girl. If my date did that, I wouldnât stick around to let him walk me to my car.â
I pointed to where they were standing next to Brooklynâs car. Grayson had just pulled a book from the shopping bag heâd been carrying since the bookstore. He handed the book to Brooklyn and she smiled happily before leaning in to kiss his cheek.
âAnd thatâs the girl who just tried to convince us she doesnât have a thing for Grayson Huntley,â Whitney muttered. She frowned as she snatched a lip gloss from her center console and then carefully applied it to her still-glossy lips. âI guess you were right. We just wasted our afternoon following B on her lame date.â
âMaybe it wasnât what you thought it was going to be, but itâs still good gossip,â I said as I pulled up the camera app on my phone.
